The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
